A Day of Inquiry: Surfaces, Depths, & the Soul
What hold does the language of “soul” have in a hurried culture like ours, one shaped by the pressures of saturation and the experience of depletion? This day of inquiry brings two leading psychologists into conversation with those interested in the pressing questions that will shape this gathering. What relationship does the reality of the soul have to ordinary experience? How do we find our way in the confusions and complexities of our lives toward healing and wholeness?
The morning session, led by Dr. James Hollis, takes Dante’s journey “in a dark wood” as a point of departure, examining “shadows” as places of discovery and transformation, occasions for discerning the meaning of the soul’s pain and power. The afternoon session, led by Dr. Lionel Corbett, considers what Dante describes as of life “under the stars” to explore the experience of the numinous and how this dimension of our lives leads us toward integration and a more expansive life in the world.
This program will be held in conjunction with an exhibition in the Meetinghouse on the Andover Newton campus of drawings and paintings of Dante’s Divine Comedy by artist Thomas Duff. Participants will be invited to explore these images during the day, and Mr. Duff will be present to participate in discussions.
